Is Fear Holding You Back?

Rebecca SpringerBy Rebecca Springer

First, I have to say, I love quotes.  My favorite quote is from Maryann Williamson.  It goes like this…

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, which frightens us most. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

What do you think of when you read or hear that quote?

Does it really make you think?

What does it really matter what others think of you?

You only have to answer to yourself and to God, or your higher power, in the end.
Let your inner light shine.  When you give yourself the gift of self confidence and others the respect and acknowledgement that they deserve, they naturally open up and feel more comfortable and it liberates them to want to be around you.  Your “brilliance” is your Light.

What is fear?

You are already “gorgeous”…God don’t make no junk!  But think about it.  How many so called beautiful people are truly happy with how they look?  If they are thin, they want to be thinner.  If they are short, they want to be tall.  If they have curly hair, they want it straight. There is a voice in their mind that tells them they aren’t good enough, just like most people.  This is fear!  Fear of not being accepted, fear of not being smart enough, fear of living life to the fullest, and fear of making mistakes.  The key is to quiet that voice.  Look in the mirror, say what you are grateful for; what you do have.  You have eyes to see, ears to hear, and a mouth and voice to speak.  Let your own voice be louder than the voice in your head.

What is your talent?

You are already “talented” too.  Think about what you do well.  My strongest talent is raising caring, loving children who have goals and a life plan.  I have many other talents too that I am always discovering.  I’m artistic to a degree, I communicate well, and I’m sometimes too empathetic.
As for “famous”, how much fame do you require?  Do you want to be world renowned or just known well by the people who mean the most to you?  Are you happy being famous with your family, your friends, your clients or customers or do you want it all?  It’s all up to you.  You have the ability to be anything that you choose to be.

Is fear holding you back?

Fear can hold you back. It can overwhelm you and literally stop you from doing what you know you are capable of doing.  What most people don’t realize is that fear is a conditioned response.  You grow up being told how you should respond to certain situations.  Granted there is a healthy fear…if there is fire, you can get burned and many people hold that to be true with the “fire of life”.  If you don’t take a chance, you won’t get burned.  But think of everything you could be missing by not taking that chance or not taking that risk.
When you make a conscious decision to see the positive and expect the best of each situation, you can usually handle more than you may think. You’ll find yourself stepping out of your comfort zone more often.  When feelings of fear do emerge you’ll be better able to keep them in perspective and balance them against your newly empowered sense of confidence.
